Chelsea Smith, Ph.D.
Senior Research Scientist
Ph.D. Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Kent State University
Dr. Chelsea Smith joined AWI as a Senior Research Scientist in the winter of 2025. As a biogeochemist, her expertise lies in nutrient and carbon cycling, with a particular focus on redox chemistry. In her role, Chelsea provides leadership to the organization’s scientific program, oversees research projects, and fosters opportunities for student engagement in scientific research.
Before joining AWI, Chelsea served as a postdoctoral researcher at Kent State University, where she investigated the interactions among carbon, iron, and manganese in Toolik Lake on Alaska’s North Slope. She holds a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Kent State University and an M.S. and B.S. in Biology from the University of Akron.
Beyond her research, Chelsea is deeply committed to environmental education and community outreach. She has developed and implemented programs that emphasize water quality, stream health, and lake biogeochemistry. These initiatives aim to connect students and community members with the natural environment, fostering a sense of stewardship and inspiring the next generation of scientists and environmental leaders.
Outside of work, Chelsea enjoys hiking, fishing, skiing, crocheting, and spending time with her two cats, Penny and Bear. Being originally from Ohio, she looks forward to exploring all the Adirondacks have to offer.
